GOLD TALK

gold talk

We use different terms to describe gold jewellery and it can be a little confusing to know what you’re buying.

Here we explain the difference between plated and filled jewellery.

gold filled

Gold Filled is not the same as Solid Gold. It is a fraction of the cost of Solid Gold and is made by bonding gold to a base metal which is usually copper or other metals. The process involves a high amount of heat and pressure and the resultant gold filled piece is typically more durable than a gold plated piece.

However Gold-filled pieces can still tarnish, but it takes special circumstances for that to happen, like excessive and rough use. But even though it’s an alloy, the thick layer on gold-filled pieces prevents tarnishing, because pure gold doesn’t tarnish. Gold filled jewellery is suitable for every day wear, just like solid gold, but without the heavy price tag.

gold plated

Gold Plated jewellery consists of a layer of gold being electrically charged onto a base metal or sterling silver. If sterling silver is plated in gold this can also be referred to as “Vermeil”. With our plated jewellery we always ensure that the base metal is silver whilst also using a heavier layer of 18k gold. In this way all the metal components of the jewellery are appropriate for sensitive skin.

Which Type of Jewelry Should I Choose?

If you’re looking for the highest-quality option a plated collection with thick plating in 18k gold with a silver base or gold filled jewellery are both suitable! The choice comes down to personal preference and often the price.

Gold filled item is generally more durable than gold plating. On the other hand,  gold plated jewellery with a sterling silver base is an excellent choice if you tend to be sensitive to metals. It can also wear more elegantly as the top layer of gold fades.

If you are someone who tends to wear jewellery everywhere and doesn't take it off gold filled is a better choice. If you like to change up your jewellery a few times a year, go for gold plated, whereas if you only buy jewellery once or twice a year, go for gold filled.

Whichever you choose, with Slani you know you get a quality piece!
